So I'm just getting the wheel bearing replaced for $560. I'll do the shocks and springs my self when the weather gets decent. I think I'm going to need a drink. So whoever guessed the price, you're a real bastard, Charlie Brown.

that's cool man. The shocks take like 2 seconds to do each side. The wheel bearings (if not ultra rusty and have a press accessible) is not too bad either. I did them at home along with the CV boots around this time last year, yay Harbor Freight press and air hammer :]

Did they have the special rear toe eccentric socket and the weights for the alignment at that tire place?

Yeah, they're BMW specialists.

That's BMW for ya. I can get a wheel bearing for $47.

This is a good time to bring up the idea I had, which would be awesome except it's probably not.
DIY garages. Rent a bay, get to use a lift, rent tools, etc. I've done some investigation, and apparently assholes are the reason these aren't much of a thing anymore.
Still, I'd love to have one around sometimes.

Good luck buddy

I've been wishing for something like that for a while now. It would be nice.

It's not the parts, it's the labor.

Really? you can buy the equipment to pack the bearing yourself for pretty cheap.

I did the fronts on my pinto. The problem is the weather is shitty, and I need it done now. I HATE HATE HATE taking the car to other people to work on, but when you need it done, and you need it now, you're gonna pay. Thus is life.

Nah I thought of that like 2 years ago.

Still though, $560 for a bearing is steep . And I assume that if the car is old enough to need a new bearing, it's no longer under warranty. Is that correct?

1996 BMW laughs at warranties and rapes my bank account.

Did you try BMAparts.com? They are usually pretty cheap for older bimmers. Doing your own work really brings down the cost.

Yeah, you are in a pickle then. Don't have a buddy with a garage?

Nope, and my garage has my project car in it
